Thief caught stealing steak from grocer

An admitted thief has been remanded after he was caught stealing $50 of meat from a grocery store.

Antoine Raynor, 47, from Pembroke pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court today to stealing four packages of rib-eye steak from Arnold’s Market.

The court heard that at around 5.30pm yesterday, a manager at the Pembroke store noticed Raynor entering the store and, remembering him from past incidents, watched him as he shopped.

Raynor was seen to approach the meat section and place several packages in his trousers before going to the cash register and paying for cigars.

When Raynor stepped out of the store the manager confronted him, demanding to see the items stashed in his clothes. Raynor refused, attempting to push past the manager, and a physical confrontation ensued.

During the incident, several packages of meat fell out of the defendant’s clothing. Police later arrived at the scene and arrested Raynor.

A total of four packages of rib-eye steak, valued at $50.37, were recovered.

After Raynor admitted the offence, the court heard that he had been due to be sentenced for another theft last December but failed to attend court.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded Raynor into custody until February 26, when he will return to the court to be sentenced for both matters.
