Reckless driver receives $7,950 in fines

A persistent driving offender has been fined $7,950 and had 81 points added to his licence.

Kiaaron Minks, 22, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to 17 road violations spanning from September to December last year.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed Minks a $4,000 fine and 14 points for four counts of driving without insurance, a $1,400 fine and 12 points for four counts of driving an unlicenced motorcycle, a $1,350 fine and 35 points for five counts of driving without a licence, and a $1,200 fine and 20 points for four counts of speeding.

The court heard that the Smith’s resident only had two points on his licence prior to September 8, when he was caught speeding at 68kmh.

When asked for the reason behind his sudden spree of reckless driving, Minks stated that he needed a vehicle to reach his job in St George’s.

“I had no option. I had to get into work,” Minks said.

“You always have an option,” Magistrate Tokunbo replied, ordering him to pay $2,000 of his fine on the day or serve 100 days in prison in default.
