Mother and son convicted in $250k drug case

A mother and son have been convicted for offences related to the importation of $250,000 of heroin.

Damon Morris, 26, and Denise Morris, 55, of Paget, were convicted unanimously by a Supreme Court jury last Friday on charges between them of importation and possession of heroin, possessing drugs with intent to supply, possessing drug equipment and possession of criminal proceeds.

The verdicts came after 7½ weeks of legal arguments, evidence and testimony.

According to a press release from the Bermuda Police Service, a jury heard that, in December 2015, a passenger arrived in Bermuda on a commercial flight, with an X-ray confirming the items were inside his body.

He subsequently excreted the items, which were found to be 86.38g of heroin with a street value of $253,380.

Following an investigation, police arrested the pair for conspiracy to import controlled drugs. During the arrest, police also found 49.97g of cocaine and 10.14 of cocaine, with a combined value of $18,800. In addition, they seized $15,210 which was in Denise Morris’s possession.

The jury found Damon Morris guilty of conspiracy to import heroin, possession of cocaine with intent to supply and possession of drug equipment.

Denise Morris was acquitted of the drugs offences, but was found guilty of possessing criminal proceeds in cash that were connected to the case.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and HM Customs, for their respective roles in bringing these offenders to justice.

“They will appear in the next Supreme Court arraignment session for a sentencing date.”
