Men remanded after admitting noodle theft

A pair of men who admitted stealing from a St George’s restaurant have been remanded into custody pending sentencing.

Deshun Dill, 34, from St George’s, and Jamal Bascome, 31, from Pembroke, both pleaded guilty to a charge of trespassing at Wong’s Golden Dragon in St George’s and stealing beef fried noodles, while Bascome alone admitted robbing an employee of cigarettes using force.

The court heard that at around 10.30pm on April 15, around half an hour after the restaurant closed, one of the employees stepped outside through the businesses kitchen door to take out the trash.

They were then approached by Dill and Bascome, who asked for food. While the employee told the men the restaurant was closed, when they went back inside they were followed by the defendants.

While Bascome continued to ask for food, Dill grabbed an order of noodles and left.

A short while later, the employees left the store and were again confronted by the defendants. Bascome allegedly punched one of the employees in the face and took cigarettes out of his pocket.

The defendant then handed the cigarettes back, and asked the frightened employee if he could have them.

The incident was recorded on security cameras, and both of the defendants were identified on the footage. In subsequent police interviews, Dill admitted being the man caught on camera, while Bascome confessed to stealing but said he had no recollection of the assault.

Magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered social inquiry reports on both defendants, remanding them into custody until their sentencing date in June.
