Man fined for possessing cannabis

A 62-year-old man has been fined $700 for possessing cannabis and drug equipment.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Michael Denbrook admitted having 1.35 grams of the drug, as well as two pieces of glass and a razor blade in Pembroke on December 10, 2015.

The court heard that Denbrook was stopped and searched by police, who found the drug in his trouser pocket.

“Oh s***, that’s mine — it’s weed,” he told them when asked what the plant material was.

The drug equipment, which later tested positive for traces of cannabis, was found in a small tobacco container and Denbrook also had $5,008 in different denominations in his possession.

Denbrook told the court he had been on his way to exchange the money for US dollars when he was surrounded by police and subsequently arrested and held for two days.

He then accused police of breaking into his girlfriend’s house, questioning whether or not this was legal.

Calling the officers’ actions “sickening” and “unbelievable”, he told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that he intended to pursue the matter through the courts and to claim back his money.

“It’s on, trust me,” he said as Mr Tokunbo fined him $500 for possessing cannabis and $200 fine for having the drug equipment.
