The Bermuda Police Service have warned members of the public not to make false or incorrect reports to officers.

A spokesman said the service has received a number of reports since May, where the information was discovered to be false.

The spokesman added that such instances can “divert police resources away from genuine emergencies and delay the investigation of legitimate incidents”.

He explained: “Members of the public are encouraged to report incidents truthfully, to the best of their knowledge and belief and to provide police with any relevant information.”

Anyone who believes that details or statements previously reported to officers were inaccurate or misleading should contact Hamilton Police Station as soon as possible.

The spokesman concluded: “Police will thoroughly investigate all reports received. However, where a report is found to contain false information, appropriate action may be taken, including criminal prosecution, in accordance with the law.”
