Men admit stealing beer and codfish
A pair of men this morning admitted stealing beer and codfish from a Paget grocer.
Dimitri Robinson, 39, and Tyrone Burgess, 42, both pleaded guilty to stealing $28 of goods from the Paget Modern Mart in an incident on March 5.
The court heard that at around 11.45am that day, the men were seen entering the store and going to the liquor department, where Robinson was seen on CCTV placing a six-pack of Carlsberg Elephant beer into a backpack worn by Burgess.
The pair then went to the meat department, where staff noticed them pick up two packages of codfish.
They later went to the check out area and purchased chips before walking out of the store. As they left, however, a manager noticed that the backpack worn by Burgess was not entirely closed and the beer was clearly visible.
Confronted outside, Robinson claimed that he had bought the items from another store, but the pair refused to return to the store and left the area.
Police were able to recognise Robinson on the CCTV footage and officers were later able to identify Burgess by his baseball cap. While Robinson admitted to the theft in an interview, Burgess said he had no recollection of the incident but confirmed that he was the one seen on the store's camera.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded Robinson to Drug Treatment Court, and fined Burgess $300 for his role in the offence.
