New Yorker admits having drugs in cabin

A cruise ship passenger found himself in Magistrates’ Court this morning after cannabinoids were found in his cabin.

Michael Platt, 25, from New York, pleaded guilty to charges of possessing the controlled substance and possessing drug equipment, specifically a vaporiser.

The court heard that at around 11am on Wednesday, Platt was stopped by ship security while leaving the Norwegian Breakaway after a drug-sniffing dog directed officers towards him.

A search revealed the vaporiser, which he said was loaded with tobacco oil.

Officers went with him to his cabin, and the K9 directed them towards a locked safe. Told to open the safe, Platt asked: “Do I have to?”

Inside, the officers found three vials of fluid, later revealed to be 1.5 millilitres of “THC oil”.

Appearing in court, Platt apologised for his actions, saying he had been “absent minded” not to check to see if the drug was legal on the island, saying he did not mean to cause anyone harm.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Platt $1,000 for the oil and $300 for the vaporiser.
