Drink-driver banned for three years

A 57-year-old Smith’s man was banned from the road for three years and fined $2,000 for drink driving.

Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday that motorcyclist Stanley Correia was stopped by police after he swerved to avoid a head-on collision with a traffic sign on Crow Lane near Hamilton around 2am last Sunday.

Police reported that Correia was unsteady on his feet, with glazed eyes and smelled of alcohol.

He told officers when questioned: “I had a few beers.”

A later breath test showed Correia had 209 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

Correia told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that it was a “bad move on my part”.
