Man fined $300 for shoplifting

A Sandys man was fined $300 today for the theft of groceries from a supermarket.

John Pereira, 52, admitted taking items worth $9.34 from MarketPlace in Sandys on April 21.

The court heard that Pereira put a Cadbury chocolate bar and a box of tea in his pockets before he paid for a loaf of bread.

He was approached by the manager outside the store and asked if he had taken any items.

Pereira said he had and offered to pay for them but the manager called the police.

The defendant was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station where he told officers he forgot the items were there.

He told the court today that he had no intent of stealing.

But magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said the offence was “not a slip of memory” and fined him $300.
