Drink-driver who flipped car banned
A drink-driver who seriously injured two of his passengers in a crash has been fined banned from the roads for three years.
Jachael Gibson, 25, from Warwick, admitted two counts of causing grievous bodily harm by driving while over the legal alcohol limit.
He also admitted driving without a valid licence.
Magistrates' Court heard that Gibson was driving on Middle Road at about 10pm on March 12 when he lost control of his car near Clarendon Road in Smith's.
The car struck a wall and overturned. Gibson did not suffer any serious injuries, but his two passengers were rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, one to the spine and one to the spleen and shoulder.
A later breath test showed Gibson had 100 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80 milligrams.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Gibson $4,350 in addition to the ban.
In a separate case, Seion Darrell, 32, from Devonshire, admitted driving over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
The court heard a police patrol car driving along North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish in the early hours of August 17 saw Darrell in a car behind them.
The driver honked his horn at the police car, which pulled over.
Darrell overtook the police car and continued to travel down the road and the officers followed.
They saw Darrell's car swerve across the road and over the centre line.
The officers stopped Darrell near the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo and noticed that his breath smelled of alcohol.
A breath test later revealed he had 192 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than double the legal limit of 80/100.
The court heard Darrell had been banned from the road in 2016 for having care and control of a vehicle while impaired, but had been allowed back on the roads.
Mr Tokunbo fined Darrell $2,000 and banned him from driving for three years.
