Man, 70, cleared of wounding charge after two-week trial

A senior was cleared of the charge of stabbing his neighbour.

Gary Cooper, 70, was found not guilty of wounding Arthur Hollis, 62, with intent to do grievous bodily harm on Monday.

The verdict was reached after a two-week trial, which started following two years of case management.

The incident was alleged to have happened on August 9, 2020 in front of the men’s apartment complex on Union Street in Hamilton.

The Royal Gazette can reveal that the case was stalled because of a backlog in court cases, as well as Mr Cooper’s struggle to retain counsel.
