Fine and roads ban for man who admitted drinking and driving

A man spotted by police driving his car over the centre line has been banned from the roads for 18 months.

Jamel Smith, 49, from Pembroke, pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court last week.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney said that police saw Smith driving strangely on Beacon Street, in Hamilton, on September 20.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breathalyser test showed that he had 171.8 milligrams of alcohol within 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

In addition to being banned, Smith was fined $1,200.
