A man who broke out of the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute is due to be sentenced in Magistrates’ Court today.

Shilo Payne, 38, from Sandys, admitted to escaping, damaging MWI property and threatening to kill staff at the facility when he appeared in court yesterday.

The court heard that Payne, who has a history of mental illness, was arrested for an unrelated matter on February 10 and taken to MWI.

He was found the next day with cigarettes and lighters in his pocket and became aggressive when a nurse took the items from him.

Payne was also hiding a screwdriver, which he used to break his room window and escape from the facility.

He was found and detained near Lindo’s supermarket in Devonshire a short time later.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded him at the Westgate Correctional Facility until tomorrow’s sentencing.
