Man, 62, sentenced to take part in court treatment programme

Magistrates' Court

A man who had control of a bike while under the influence of alcohol has been ordered to participate in a court treatment programme.

Gary Ascento, 62, from Smith’s, admitted the offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that police saw two men near a bike on Union Street last December. One of them had facial injuries.

Ascento, who sustained the injuries, admitted riding the bike, but declined any medical attention.

Officers smelt alcohol on his breath and heard that his speech was slurred.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson disqualified Ascento from driving all vehicles until further notice and ordered that he participate in DUI Court, beginning on March 28.

She also ordered that a drug and alcohol assessment be conducted for him and released him on $1,500 bail.
