Ban for motorist who led police on high-speed chase

A motorist who led police on a high-speed chase through Devonshire and Paget was banned from the road last week.

Kyjah Simons, 21, from Warwick, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and failing to provide police with a breath sample in an incident on January 6.

Magistrates’ Court heard that at about 11pm, police were conducting speed checks on South Road in Devonshire, near the junction with Ariel Drive.

The officers spotted Simons travelling west at high speed and signalled for him to pull over.

However, he instead accelerated, swerving around officers as he continued west at high speed.

Officers pursued Simons, but he continued to flee, weaving in and out of traffic and causing other motorists to take evasive action.

The chase continued on to Point Finger Road and The Lane, where Simons narrowly avoided a collision with a taxi, before he finally stopped near the junction with Stowe Hill.

The court hears Simons told officers: “I didn’t stop because I was drinking at a party. I had three or four beers.”

Simons was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he refused to provide a breath sample for analysis.

After he pleaded guilty, senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson asked Simons to explain his actions. “We have people dying on our roads,” she said. “People going way too fast and not taking the law seriously.”

Simons apologised for his actions and said it would not happen again.

Ms Anderson fined Simons $1,000 for dangerous driving and $1,500 for refusing to provide a breath sample, ordering that both fines be paid immediately.

She further banned Simons from driving all vehicles for a period of 18 months.
