Man caught drink-driving after being banned from roads

Court reports were ordered yesterday on a Warwick man who admitted impaired driving months after being banned from the roads.

Bray Saltus, 61, pleaded guilty to driving on Crow Lane while impaired, driving while disqualified and giving police false information in an incident on April 23.

The court heard that Saltus was stopped by police at about 2am that day as part of a traffic check in the area.

Saltus was asked for his driver’s licence, but told officers he did not have it with him and gave the name “Ronald Richards”.

Officers looked up the name and saw that the photograph associated with that driver’s licence did not match Saltus.

Saltus maintained the false identity even after police found his licence in his wallet, which he claimed was not his.

He admitted his identity later after police confirmed that he had been disqualified from driving last November for an incident in which he crashed into a casuarina tree.

During his interactions with the police, officers noticed that Saltus was unsteady on his feet and that he smelt of alcohol.

Saltus denied drinking at the time and refused to provide police with a breath sample.

After pleading guilty, Saltus admitted that drinking had affected his life and said he would be willing to observe DUI court.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered a drugs and alcohol assessment to determine if Saltus would be suitable for the programme.

She released Saltus on $2,500 bail and banned him from driving any vehicles until a further order from the court.
