Man throws knife at police sergeant on Christmas Day

A man who threw a knife at a police sergeant on Christmas Day will be sentenced next month.

Jagai Bailey, 22, admitted throwing the weapon and spraying the sergeant with a hose, pointing the knife at and threatening to kill other officers, and driving while impaired by alcohol or a drugs, when he appeared in in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that Bailey sprayed the hose and wielded the knife, which broke after hitting the ground, after pulling his car into a Sandys driveway and walking into a residence.

Officers saw that Bailey’s eyes were glazed, smelt alcohol on his breath, concluded that he had been drinking before getting behind the wheel, and took him to Hamilton Police Station.

Bailey, from Sandys, was fined $1,500 and disqualified from driving all vehicles for 18 months for driving under the influence and will be sentenced for the other offences on February 7.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson requested that social inquiry and drug use reports be written for Bailey, ordered him to follow an 8pm-to-6am daily curfew and released him on $5,000 bail.
