Six months behind bars for Ice Queen robber

A man who stole from Ice Queen restaurant has been sentenced to six months behind bars.

Michael Simons, 29, admitted robbing Glen Duarte, an employee at the restaurant, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in August, after initially denying the charge.

Simons also tried to remove a till from the restaurant, located in Paget Plaza, on January 25, 2023, but dropped it in the lobby, injuring himself.

Police said he left the premises with a “unknown sum” of money.

Simons, from Sandys, also admitted damaging a window and assaulting a police officer in April, as well as driving while impaired by alcohol.

During yesterday’s appearance, prosecutor Matthew Frick highlighted how Simons broke the window and bit the officer while he was on bail for robbery at Ice Queen.

He was sentenced for all offences yesterday.

Elizabeth Christopher, Simons’s lawyer, toldthe court that her client was intoxicated during the incidents and did not remember much about them.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos said Simons was “solely responsible” for his actions and that intoxication did not excuse them.

In addition to six months for the robbery, Ms Sofianos sentenced Simons to two months in jail for the assault and an additional two months for damaging the window.

She ordered all sentences run concurrently, followed by two years’ probation, and that Simons pay $269 in restitution for the damaged window.

For driving while impaired, Simons was fined $1,500, or 90 days behind bars if not paid, and was disqualified from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
