A former government senator, who has fallen behind in paying off rent arrears to an elderly woman, said yesterday he would be able to resume regular payments this year.

Curtis Richardson has been paying monthly payments to Margaret Harvey, his former landlady, after racking up $19,000 in unpaid rent.

Magistrates’ Court heard that he had fallen behind after losing work and was relying on financial assistance to make ends meet.

At an earlier hearing, Mr Richardson had told the court that his bank balance showed that he had $8.25, of which he was ordered to pay $5.

However, at a hearing yesterday, Mr Richardson said he had been able to secure work and would be able to resume regular payments of at least $250 per month.

Magistrate Aura Cassidy adjourned the matter until May 2025.

She urged Mr Richardson to pay more than $250 if possible, as a show of good faith.
