A visitor who tried to smuggle drugs into Westgate prison has been sentenced to two years’ probation.

Faheem Swan, 27, admitted attempting to bring controlled drugs, listed as “high-risk prohibited items”, into the prison when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court last month.

Swan, from Sandys, also admitted having diamorphine, commonly known as heroin, and Delta-9 THC inside the facility and was sentenced for the offences yesterday.

The court heard that corrections officers found Swan with 0.84 grams of heroin and 4.46g of THC when he visited the prison, which is an increased penalty zone, on April 6, 2024.

Swan apologised for the offences, which he initially denied, and told the court he was working to better himself.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson highlighted Swan’s remorse and guilty pleas, but said “conveying drugs of any kind is a serious offence”.

She ordered that Swan stay away from drugs and alcohol, participate in any programmes recommended by court services and complete community service during his probation.

Ms Anderson also ordered that Swan return to court on September 24 for a probation review.
