Scottish lawyer joins Bermuda Bar days after engagement
A Scottish lawyer was looking forward to her return to the courtroom yesterday after she officially joined Bermuda’s legal community.
Angela Robertson, 32, said the past week had been “surreal” for her after being Called to the Bar days after getting engaged to her longtime boyfriend.
Ms Robertson said: “I think I’m right in that exciting part of my life where I’m going to look back and think, ‘Wow, 2025 was kind of my year’.
“I think I’m still waiting for the bubble to burst — but for now, I’m absolutely on cloud nine.”
Ms Robertson, from Pembroke, was joined at her Call to the Bar ceremony by her fiancé and work colleagues from the firm MJM.
She received her Bachelor’s in Law and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Dundee in Scotland.
Ms Robertson said after the ceremony that before her move to Bermuda, she worked as a commercial litigation lawyer at Shoosmiths in Edinburgh.
She explained that she decided to move to get more experience doing cross-jurisdictional work.
Ms Robertson said: “I came across Bermuda and then I started researching it, and fell in love instantly with the place.
“A role came up with MJM at the right time personally and professionally for me and it all seemed to work out.”
Ms Robertson said that the “community feel” of Bermuda reminded her of her home town of Inverness.
She added that the “beautiful” island scenery helped with the move.
Jennifer Haworth, the director of dispute resolution at MJM, said that Ms Robertson had been instrumental in several of the firm’s projects.
She added that she had worked with MJM’s private client team on matters such as estate recovery and employment matters.
Ms Haworth said: “She always persevered and always showed tremendous diligence with her work.
“She has a very good rapport with everybody in the office and works very hard on the various projects that she’s given.”
Ms Robertson said that she took an interest in law because she saw it as a balance between helping others and her interest in debate.
She explained: “I’ve always been interested in helping people and making people’s lives a little bit better.
“I was particularly interested in subjects like debate in school and social justice, so that really pushed me into the field of law.
“I pursued it and ended up really loving it, so I ended up doing it right to the end.”
Ms Robertson said she looked forward to returning to the courtroom after being away from it for almost two years.
She added that she hoped to build on her professional connections and sharpen her advocacy skills.
