Spanish man admits smuggling freebase cocaine
A Spanish national has pleaded guilty to smuggling hundreds of thousands of dollars of freebase cocaine into the island.
Luis Roberto Gomez Paniagua was arrested with his daughter, Pamela Gomez Alanzo, at LF Wade International Airport on April 29.
The pair, who have joint Spanish and Dominican Republic nationality, were charged with conspiring with others not before the court to import the controlled drug, along with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
During the arraignments session yesterday, Paniagua, 46, pleaded guilty to both counts after the charges were put to him through an interpreter.
His daughter was not asked to enter a plea.
According to prosecutor Adley Duncan, the drugs weighed 797 grams and had a street value of roughly $250,000.
Both defendants were remanded in custody. Paniagua will be sentenced tomorrow, when Ms Alanzo’s case will also be heard.
