Man admits slew of traffic offences

A man has been disqualified from driving all vehicles until 2029 after he admitted a series of traffic offences when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.

Karaem Gibbons, 49, pleaded guilty to causing Ryan Kirby grievous bodily harm by riding a bike without care and attention as well as several other offences, when he appeared in court yesterday.

The court heard that Gibbons rode through a red traffic light and collided with Mr Kirby’s vehicle in Warwick.

Mr Kirby sustained fractured ribs and other injuries, and Gibbons was also hurt in the incident on April 6, 2021.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson fined Gibbons, from Pembroke, $3,000 for the offence and disqualified him from driving for two years.

Gibbons also accrued 34 points on his driving licence yesterday after he admitted offences such as not having a valid driving licence or insurance and riding an unlicensed bike.

Ms Anderson further banned Gibbons from the roads for 17 months from August 2027, based on point accumulation, and fined him an additional $7,650.

She ordered that Gibbons pay some fines right away, but that court services assess his ability to complete community service in lieu of paying others.

In a separate case, Jaden Furbert, 23, was disqualified from driving for 18 months after pleading guilty to driving dangerously on Front Street.

Ms Anderson also fined Furbert, from Southampton, $1,500 for the offence, which took place on September 10, and ordered him to pay right away or spend 150 days behind bars.
