Man admits causing death of woman by impaired driving
A man will return for sentencing next month after he admitted responsibility for the road death of a woman.
Daniel Tucker, 37, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court yesterday to causing the death of Lovella Cruz by driving while impaired.
The incident happened along Somerset Road, Sandys, on November 9, 2023.
Tucker faced a further charge of driving without a licence, but this charge was left on file.
Puisne Judge Alan Richards adjourned the case until October 30 for sentencing, and extended Tucker’s $15,000 bail.
He reminded Tucker to abide by his bail conditions, which included being unable to leave the island, warning that he would be remanded if he failed to abide by court rules.
Mr Justice Richards added that Tucker, from Devonshire, was likely to serve prison time for his offence.
Ms Cruz, a 48-year-old mother of two, was a guest worker from the Philippines.
She came to Bermuda in 2018 and was employed as a cleaner, then became a caregiver who worked with the terminally ill.
Ms Cruz had previously been a caregiver in Israel before coming to the island.
Ruth Clark, a friend and roommate of Ms Cruz, described her a “a hard worker” and the breadwinner of her family.
She said Ms Cruz was raising money to fund her sons’ university educations.
She described her as “very kind and caring and considerate of others,” a trait that she said made her great at her job.
Ms Clark added: “She worked so hard, but she was always happy because she loved to give and she knew that, by working here in Bermuda, she was able to give to her family back home.”
She said Ms Cruz visited her family, including her husband, in the Philippines two months before her death — the first time she had seen her family in seven years.
Ms Clark added that Ms Cruz was on her way home from work on her motorcycle when the incident took place.
