Two fined for causing collisions through carelessness

Two people were each fined $800 yesterday for causing traffic collisions by driving carelessly.

Vincent Whitter, 82, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving without due care and attention.

The court heard that Whitter was travelling along North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, when he veered into the opposing lane in his taxi.

The taxi made contact with another large vehicle and caused extensive damages to their fronts and sides. The incident happened on July 4.

Whitter, from Devonshire, said he was “very, very sorry” for the incident.

He added: “This is the first accident I’ve been involved in the 61 years I’ve been on the roads.”

Magistrate Craig Attridge placed eight demerit points on his licence in addition to fining him $800.

Mystere Monteiro, 38, pleaded guilty to the same offence in a separate incident.

The court heard that Monteiro was coming out of a driveway on Woodlands Road, Pembroke, when she collided with a motorcyclist riding down the street.

The motorcyclist flew over his handlebars and sustained several injuries, including a sprained ankle and many scrapes.

The incident happened on May 26.

Tanisha Butler, for the defence, argued that the motorcyclist was hidden behind a blind corner and that her client could not react in time because of his vehicle’s speed.

Monteiro, from Hamilton Parish, added: “I apologise for what happened to the gentleman. I did take care as much as I could.

“My apologies to the gentleman.”

In addition to the fine, Mr Attridge placed eight demerit points on Monteiro’s licence.
