Man found crashed in Hamilton admits drug, driving offences
A man was found with cocaine and thousands in cash after crashing his bike near Hamilton Police Station almost four years ago, Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday.
Troyan Smith, 32, admitted having the drug with intent to supply, along with drink-driving and riding without a valid driver’s licence when he appeared in court.
The court heard that police were alerted to the sound of a bang along Victoria Street on November 3, 2021.
Officers found Smith unconscious and injured next to his bike and discovered plastic twists containing a suspicious substance as well as $4,311 cash in his pockets.
Smith, from Devonshire, regained consciousness and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where blood tests showed excess alcohol in his system.
More than seven grams of freebase cocaine, which officers deduced was intended for supply, were found in the plastic twists on Victoria Street as well as at Smith’s home.
Magistrate Maria Sofianos fined him $1,500 for drink-driving and having no drivers’ licence and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
Ms Sofianos also ordered a social inquiry report be written for Smith in relation to the cocaine offence and that the cash found by police be forfeited.
She extended his bail until his sentencing for the cocaine offence on December 10.
