Senior given suspended sentence for collision
A motorist who injured a woman in Devonshire was given a suspended prison sentence.
Mayberline Black, 71, admitted injuring Akilah Taylor by driving a car without care and attention during an earlier appearance in Magistrates’ Court, but was sentenced for the offence yesterday.
The court heard that Ms Taylor was admitted to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit to be treated for fractured ribs and other injuries sustained in the collision on Orchard Grove in Pembroke on April 28.
Black, from Pembroke, called the collision “an unfortunate accident” and told the court that she still stayed in contact with Ms Taylor.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson noted Black’s lack of previous traffic convictions but also highlighted the poor state of driving on Bermuda’s roads.
She sentenced Black to one year in prison, suspended for two years, ordered her to pay $5,000 in restitution to Ms Taylor and disqualified her from driving all vehicles for two years.
In a separate case, Filipe Pacheco Carreiro was banned from the roads for seven months after admitting two counts of speeding. Carreiro, from Paget, was also fined for the offences.
