Man denies killing of woman found in Warwick

A man has denied killing a woman who was found unresponsive in Warwick in May.

Jamie Cann Jr, 30, pleaded not guilty today to unlawfully killing 29-year-old Honnée Smith, when he appeared before the Supreme Court via Zoom.

Mr Cann could stand trial for the offence, which he allegedly committed on May 8, early next year.

Puisne Judge Juan Wolffe adjourned the case to January 5 and remanded Mr Cann, of no fixed abode, in custody until that time.

Ms Smith’s body was discovered off the trails near Warwick playground on May 8. Her death in the hospital was announced the next day.

Also appearing at the monthly arraignments session was Canadian Michael McKenna, who pleaded guilty to importing cannabis and having the controlled drug with intent to supply.

McKenna, from Toronto, committed the offences on July 13.

Mr Justice Wolffe remanded McKenna in custody until December 1, when he could be sentenced for the offences.
