Woman admits owning killer dogs

A woman whose dogs killed her neighbour’s pet chickens will be sentenced in Magistrates’ Court next month.

Trena Riley, 54, admitted a total of six dog-related offences when she appeared in court yesterday.

They include owning a male “terrier-type” dog, Bolt, that killed two chickens, and a female dog, Sunny, that killed another.

Riley also admitted owning another dog named Stormy that did not originate from a legitimate source, as well as having a fourth, Tosca, without a valid licence.

Prosecutors agreed to drop charges that she did not have a licence for her other three pets, and that she had kept more than two dogs on her Smith’s property without permission.

Riley denied all charges at an initial appearance in court in June.

The court heard yesterday that Keith Paynter, Riley’s neighbour, saw Bolt and Sonny attack three of his pet chickens on September 18, 2024.

Two birds died and a third was injured. Two days later, Bolt killed another of Mr Paynter’s chickens.

Dog wardens subsequently seized the dogs from Riley’s home.

Prosecutor Jonathan Jervis suggested Riley pay Mr Paynter restitution and be sentenced to probation for the offences.

Ashley Fubler, for Riley, said her client used the dogs as support.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos ordered a social inquiry report to be written for Riley and extended her bail to December 18, when she is expected to be sentenced.
