Christmas blues for drink-driver caught with drugs, scale
Christmas Day celebrations turned sour for a man who was caught driving while nearly three times over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
Rejay Johnston, 34, was also found to be in possession of cocaine, cannabis and a digital scale used to prepare drugs when police searched him after he was stopped for a roadside sobriety check, Magistrates’ Court heard.
Johnston pleaded guilty to the drug charges and also to drink driving. He will be sentenced on January 30.
The court heard that police were conducting roadside sobriety checks on Christmas Day last year when they stopped Johnston on his motorcycle on South Road in Paget.
When questioned, Johnston admitted to police that he had been drinking beforehand.
Officers searched him and found two packages of a plantlike material that they suspected was cannabis.
They then searched his motorcycle and found a digital scale with plantlike material stuck to it, as well as $589 in cash.
Officers arrested Johnston on suspicion of drink driving and suspicion of drug possession.
He was taken to Hamilton Police Station and gave a sample of breath for analysis.
The breath test showed that Johnston had 218 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.
While in police custody, officers further found several twist bags on him with a crystalline substance inside of them.
Government analysts later confirmed that the plantlike material was 26.43g of cannabis with a street value of about $1,300 and that the crystalline substance was 1.14g of cocaine with a purity of 82 per cent and a street value of about $213.
Analyses also found THC on the scale, suggesting that it was used for drug preparation.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered Johnston undergo a social inquiry report and adjourned the case until January 30 for sentencing.
She released Johnston, from Warwick, on $3,000 bail.
