Woman denies charity-related offence

A woman is accused of giving false or misleading information to the Registrar of Charities almost three years ago.

Delopeena Maxwell-Smith, 54, denied “recklessly or knowingly” providing inaccurate information to the registrar “in a material way” when she appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Ms Maxwell-Smith, a published author, allegedly committed the offence while completing an application to register the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service Benevolent Fund as a charity under the Charities Act on February 16, 2023.

It was not listed as a registered charity as of February 2025.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos adjourned the case to February 16 and released Ms Maxwell-Smith, from Devonshire, on $5,000 bail until that time.
