Man in court after $14,000 goes up in smoke from awning fire
A serial offender who set the awning alight on a Hamilton business will be sentenced in Supreme Court on Monday.
Eric Richardson, 34, admitted damaging the overhang outside CG Insurance when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.
The awning on Reid Street was partially destroyed by the time the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded on April 30.
Footage showed Richardson, of no fixed abode, standing under the awning before the fire, which caused $14,225 in damages. He was found with two lighters in his pocket.
Richardson has numerous previous convictions, including setting Island Cuisine restaurant’s dumpster ablaze. He requested to be considered for probation.
Cindy Clarke, the Director of Public Prosecutions, stated that Magistrates’ Court did not have the remit to sentence him, requesting his case be moved to the Supreme Court.
Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered Richardson to appear during the January arraignments and remanded him into custody until then.
