Repeat offender: ‘I’m ready to change’

A man who admitted attempting to smuggle drugs into prison told a court that he was ready to turn his life around.

David Dill, 57, spoke yesterday as he awaited sentencing in Magistrates’ Court for three different offences on separate dates.

Dill, from Devonshire, had pleaded guilty to bringing contraband into Westgate Correctional Facility - a duct-taped package containing a magnet, two plastic bags of plant material and a package of drugs.

The incident happened on August 14, 2024 at the prison in Sandys.

He also pleaded guilty to the theft of a black Yamaha motorcycle on July 1 last year in Devonshire.

Dill further admitted attempting to trespass on to a building in Dockyard with intent to steal on July 26 last year.

Kael London, for the Crown, told the court that Dill had a history of drug abuse and required rehabilitation.

However, he added that Dill was unsuitable for Drug Treatment Court and instead recommended that he faced imprisonment.

Nicole Smith, for the defence, recognised that her client could benefit from the Right Living House rehab home — but admitted that he might not qualify.

She added: “While it sounds good, we have to focus on what is realistically available.”

Dill told the court: “I’m ready to change — I just need help and I need to get better.”

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson gave Dill a “global sentence”, meaning that it covered all offences, of 18 months’ imprisonment.
