Drivers taken off the road for new year offences

A magistrate banned three men from the roads after they each admitted alcohol-related driving offences — including two that took place in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Gregory Caesar, 42, from Paget, pleaded guilty to a count of driving while impaired by alcohol in an incident on January 1.

The court heard yesterday that at around 1.10am, officers received a report of a collision on South Road in Warwick. When they arrived on the scene, they saw the defendant on the ground in the road complaining of pain to his leg.

Asked what happened, Caesar said he was travelling west behind a car when the vehicle suddenly applied its brakes, causing him to strike the rear of the car.

However, the officers noticed that the defendant’s voice was slurred and he smelt of alcohol.

Caesar confirmed that he had been drinking that evening, and said he had his last drink about ten minutes before the collision.

In a separate case, Karl Godfrey, 32, from St George’s, pleaded guilty to refusing to provide police with a breath sample later that same morning.

The court heard that at about 3.30am, police were on mobile patrol on Middle Road when they noticed the car in front of them swerving across the road.

The officers pulled the vehicle over near the former TN Tatem school building in Warwick and spoke with the driver, identified as Godfrey, who admitted that he had been drinking but said he had not had anything since 8pm or 9pm.

Godfrey told officers that he was just going to the nearby Rubis gas station and police followed him there before moving on.

However, later that morning the officers saw the same car travelling west at a high rate of speed.

The officers stopped Godfrey near Lighthouse Hill, in Southampton, and, noticing that his voice was slurred and that he smelt of alcohol, demanded samples of breath, which he refused.

In a third case, Nathan Richardson, 29, from Smith’s, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit in an incident on January 8.

The court heard that at about 12.10am, officers responded to a report of a crash on Berry Hill Road, near the junction with Tee Street.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a damaged motorcycle and debris on the road, with Richardson sat on a wall nearby.

The officers spoke with Richardson, who said he was the rider of the vehicle, but the officers noticed that he appeared unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed.

He later agreed to provide police with a breath sample which showed a reading of 233 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, almost triple the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

Magistrate Craig Attridge fined each man $1,500 and banned them all from driving for a period of 18 months.
