Jury discharged in Supreme Court firearm case
The trial of a Warwick woman accused of possessing a gun and drugs was halted yesterday and the jury discharged.
Desiree O’Connor, 55, had denied allegations that she possessed a firearm, eight rounds of ammunition and freebase cocaine with intent to supply in an incident in September 2024.
While closing speeches in the trial were anticipated to begin last week, Puisne Judge Alan Richards informed the jury yesterday morning that issues had arisen and, despite the best efforts of counsel, it was unclear when they would be resolved.
As a result, Mr Justice Richards said the point had come where proceeding with the trial had become untenable.
He thanked the jury for their time, adding: “I am sorry if you are frustrated by this turn of events, but unfortunately it has become necessary.”
Ms O’Connor was released on bail, with the matter expected to return to the courts next month.
