Man could face 12 months jail time for assault, destruction

A man could face a year of jail time after he admitted several attacks on his then girlfriend.

Dakari Grant, 22, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court today to three counts of assault on a woman causing bodily harm, as well as two counts of property damage.

The court heard that on an unknown date between July 1 and July 8, 2023, Grant was on a motorbike with the woman as passenger when the two got into an argument.

He stopped the bike on Spice Hill Road in Warwick and slapped and punched the victim across her body before throwing her helmet at her face after she fell.

She sustained swelling to her face and a split lip, as well as bruising to her left arm.

During another incident, which happened on an unknown date last April, the pair had a disagreement at Grant’s Sandys home that ended with him punching the woman in the eye, leading to bruising.

The two were involved in another disagreement last September that resulted in Grant punching the woman in her face and choking her, leading to another black eye and pain to her throat.

On September 24 that same year, Grant visited the woman as she was leaving her workplace and the two became involved in another argument.

He eventually threw the woman’s iPhone, valued at about $1,340, on to the ground and tossed her purse off a nearby dock.

The court heard that the phone shattered from the impact and that the purse contained the woman’s passport, driver’s licence and an unknown amount of currency.

Police arrested Grant the following day.

Grant initially denied the charges when accused last September but changed his pleas yesterday.

Paula Tyndale, for the Crown, said the victim wrote in a statement that the incidents had a prolonged negative effect on her mental health and relationships.

The woman added, however, that she was also pregnant with Grant’s child and as a result asked for leniency for him.

Ms Tyndale told the court that Grant underwent a social inquiry report and demonstrated “an antisocial construct in his mind” about how to deal with disagreements in a relationship.

She recommended he be sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment and that, if this sentence were suspended, he undergo counselling during that time.

Magistrate Craig Attridge adjourned the case until March 19 for sentencing and extended Grant’s bail.
