Police witness recalls arrest of murder accused
A police witness recounted arresting a man accused of a June 2020 murder, more than a year after the incident.
Detective Constable Michael Redfern, the lead investigating officer in the case, said he along with several other officers went to a home in Paget on the morning of September 30, 2021 and arrested Davin Dill over the murder of Joshua Rowse, who died after an attack on June 14, 2020.
He told the Supreme Court yesterday that Mr Dill — who was also charged for being in possession of a bladed article — was cautioned and taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he was processed and detained.
Constable Redfern agreed, when put to him by Charles Richardson for the defence, that Mr Dill said “I am innocent” when the two charges were first read to him.
The witness recalled visiting the home of the defendant on June 15, 2020, where he took a photograph of Mr Dill’s bedroom that was shown to the jury.
Jurors were also shown photographic evidence of a car which was found by police during their investigations in a field, in the vicinity of Paget Primary School.
Earlier, Prabhakar Kayum, a doctor, who performs medical assessments for the Bermuda Police Service, said he examined Mr Dill on June 16, 2020, at the Hamilton Police Station in the presence of two officers.
He said Mr Dill bore a stab wound to the right knee and another wound close to his nose.
Dr Kayum said he also observed “fresh and pink” lacerations on Mr Dill’s right hand palm as well as scratches to the right side of his neck.
Under cross examination, the doctor said although he performed the examination on June 16,2020, he did not write a police report until October 12, 2021.
The witness said he relied on his notes to write the police report and in January 2023, he examined several photographs which were taken of Mr Dill’s wounds to write another report.
Dr Kayum said he was asked by police to provide the ages of the wounds he observed on the defendant in the January 2023 report.
He said the wound close to Mr Dill’s nose was about three to seven days old while the wound on his right knee was about one to two weeks old.
Mr Dill, 27, has denied charges that he murdered Mr Rowse, 22, in an incident on June 14, 2020 and that he had a bladed article, specifically a knife, in a public place.
The court was previously shown CCTV footage from the Rubis service station on South Road, Warwick, in which Mr Rowse and others were seen to arrive at the station shortly after 7pm.
While Mr Rowse stood outside the store, a black car is seen to pull up and two men get out, one from the passenger’s seat and the other from the back seat on the driver’s side.
The men chased Mr Rowse around the side of the building, with the black car following behind.
Seconds later, Mr Rowse was seen to walk back into frame hunched over and holding his abdomen.
The trial continues.
