Owner of chicken-killing dogs given probation

A woman whose dogs killed three pet chickens has been sentenced to probation in Magistrates’ Court.

Trena Riley, 54, admitted a total of six dog-related offences when she initially appeared in court in November.

The charges, for which Riley was sentenced last month, included owning two “terrier-type” dogs, Sonny and Bolt, that killed three pet chickens belonging to her neighbour, Keith Paynter.

Riley also admitted owning another dog, Stormy, which did not originate from a legitimate source, as well as a fourth, Tosca, without a valid licence.

The court heard in November that Sonny and Bolt attacked three of Mr Paynter’s chickens on September 18, 2024.

Two birds died and a third was injured during the attack. Bolt killed another of Mr Paynter’s chickens two days later.

In addition to probation, Riley was ordered to complete 107 hours of community service and pay Mr Paynter $400.
