Man fined for slew of traffic offences
A man who committed a series of traffic offences in St George’s was fined almost $3,000 in Magistrates’ Court.
Shameir Somersall, 21, admitted riding a bike without due care and attention, not stopping for police after a crash, using an unlicensed cycle and wearing unfastened headgear when he appeared in court on Friday. He was sentenced for the offences yesterday.
The court heard that police saw Somersall on York Street on October 7, 2024, riding a bike with an expired licence.
The rider’s helmet was unfastened and police signalled for him to pull over.
Somersall rode away from officers and struck a parked vehicle near King’s Square.
The St George’s resident was released on April 24 after spending at least four months behind bars in connection with unrelated matters.
Magistrate Maria Sofianos fined Somersall a total of $2,950 for all the offences and added several points to his licence.
Ms Sofianos sentenced Somersall to 30 days in jail if the fines are not paid, but ordered that time be taken from how long he was already behind bars.
