Teen charged with multiple chain thefts

A teenager accused of snatching a gold chain from a man’s neck has been charged with committing two separate robberies on the same day.

Jase Lawes-Mathias, 19, from Pembroke, was charged with robbing a man in Devonshire of a gold Cuban link chain valued at $500 when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that the defendant used force to carry out the act, putting pressure on the victim’s neck during the alleged incident on December 17.

Lawes-Mathias was also accused of robbing another man, using force, of a gold chain, gold pendant, silver pendant and Pandora ring, valued in total between $780 and $880, on the same date in Smith’s.

He chose to have his case heard in the Supreme Court, meaning he was not required to enter a plea.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson imposed $5,000 bail with one like surety and with conditions including the placement of an ankle monitoring bracelet.

The matter will return to Magistrates’ Court on June 8.
