A woman who threw pepper spray into someone’s face was given a conditional discharge in Magistrates’ Court.

Mitayah Richardson, 20, admitted causing a woman bodily harm when she appeared in court in May after she initially denied the offence, and was sentenced yesterday.

The court heard that Richardson, from Devonshire, and others approached the victim at Champs Variety in Sandys on March 12, 2025.

Richardson briefly spoke to the victim before she threw a vial of pepper spray into her face.

The charge of causing bodily harm was amended from an earlier allegation that Richardson caused grievous bodily harm with intent to disable the same victim, which she also denied.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney suggested that Richardson be given a conditional discharge of between 18 and 24 months for the offence.

Nicole Smith, Richardson’s lawyer, highlighted that her client was 18 when she committed the offence, which she claimed occurred after a rumour was spread about her.

Ms Smith said Richardson’s actions were immature rather than bad and also requested she be given a conditional discharge.

A letter from Richardson read aloud in court acknowledged that she caused the victim pain and suffering and highlighted her dream to pursue nursing.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos sentenced Richardson to a 12-month conditional discharge for the offence and ordered her to stay away from drugs and alcohol, enrol in a GED programme and counselling and take random drug tests during this period.
