Impaired drivers banned

Two drivers stopped by police in Pembroke have been disqualified from driving all vehicles.

Markino Rogers, 33, admitted refusing a breath test, while 40-year-old Chico Lema pleaded guilty to drink-driving, when they appeared yesterday in Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that police stopped Rogers, from St George’s, after he turned left on Queen Street without stopping on April 5.

Officers saw that Rogers’s eyes were red and smelt alcohol on his breath.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he declined several times to take a breath test.

The court also heard that police followed Lema from Pitts Bay Road to a private driveway on May 22, 2025.

Lema, who initially denied the drink-driving offence, told police that he drank alcohol before getting behind the wheel and breath tests showed between 137.9 and 142.7 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos fined Lema, from Pembroke, $1,500 for the offence and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Ms Sofianos ordered Rogers observe DUI Court starting today and that a drug use report be written for him.

She released him on $1,200 bail and disqualified him from driving until further instruction from the court.
