Young guns offer hope of bright future

Bermuda head coach David Moore isn't given to getting carried away, but he can't help but be excited by young duo Damali Bell and Kamau Leverock. The youngsters have shone during the senior team's training camp in Dubai, putting in performances that have hinted at a bright future. In the past week, Bell has taken his first senior wicket for Bermuda, while on Saturday, Leverock scored his maiden international 50 in the five wicket defeat at the hands of UAE.And Moore is convinced that the pair of them could go all the way and play first class cricket if they continue to improve as they have been doing.“Kamau's innings was very promising,” said Moore. “I think the two guys who we have brought on tour in Bell and Leverock have been….I'm very excited by not only what they have produced for us on the field, but also their intensity and work ethic at practice, as well as their desire to listen.“Not only to the coaching staff, but also to senior players on how to improve, and that's very, very encouraging in both those guys. If they stick to it, I'm hoping for guys like that, that they not only have a good a career for Bermuda, but they may get a foot in for a first class career or something like that.”As an academy coach in Australia, and national coach in West Indies, Moore has plenty experience of talented youngsters, and he would happily put Bell and Leverock up against their peers anywhere else in the world.“They most definitely have the potential,” said Moore. “In equivalent kids to what I have seen in Australia and the West Indies, in particular, they are certainly well within that elite player range that I have seen.”With the opportunities in Bermuda limited for player progression, Moore is looking to create opportunities for them to get better overseas. There have been suggestions in the recent past that the new West Indies High Performance centre could be an option for talented Bermuda youngsters, while the Australian's links to the county game also means that Leverock and Bell could end up continuing their cricketing education in the UK.“I'm encouraged by their potential,” said Moore. “I try not to get too excited about stuff, because that excitement can always misguide your judgment, but, these two guys certainly fit into a group of guys that would be elite in any country in the world.“And we're in discussions with people to try and give these guys opportunities to explore their potential.”* For the match report from Saturday's game between Bermuda and UAE,, see Page 20.
