Somerset can't find a coach

Somerset Cricket Club are struggling to find a cricket coach for the new season and could be about to lose captain Jacobi Robinson to Southampton Rangers. The club advertised the vacant coaching position in December with the deadline for applications expiring last Friday, so far no one has applied for the job.President Alfred Maybury is at a loss to explain why one of the oldest clubs on the Island would be having difficulties in filling the position.“At this point we haven’t received any applications,” Maybury said. “We will continue to look, because we want to be able to fill that post soon, so that we can actually start all our preparations for the cricket season.“I think partly it could be timing, we’re at the beginning of the year, people are still thinking about football, not cricket. And (people) probably didn’t even pay attention to it (the advert).”Robinson meanwhile, who sat out the end of the season with injury as his team were relegated to the First Division, has been rumoured to be considering a switch to Premier Division champions Rangers. The Somerset skipper came in for some criticism at the end of the season, with several people within the club questioning his commitment to the team. He and Maybury are due to sit down soon and discuss what the future holds.“I had one meeting with him (Robinson),” said Maybury. “We were supposed to have a follow up meeting, but that hasn’t happened yet. Once we do that, we’ll know where we are going. It’s a case of looking at what he wants, and at what the club wants, and trying to find a good place in between there somewhere.“At this point we’re just looking to have another meeting with him, and the team actually. I want to be able to have a good discussion with the entire team.....so that we’re all on the same page.”As far as the coaching goes Maybury isn’t sure what his next move will be, the club could re-advertise the position, or turn their gaze inwards as they were forced to do last year when Winston Reid took charge just before the season started.“We may re-advertise, failing that we will probably look within and see who has the qualifications and is prepared to do the job for us.“Winston is a stalwart, he’s very interested in the development of cricket, he has cricket to heart, and so that worked for us at that time. We’re always happy to have him as a part of the organisation and cricket programme.”Ideally though Somerset want to bring in some fresh blood, and Maybury was keen to point out that the new coach would have the opportunity to develop the club’s cricket programme from the ground up.“We want someone with fresh ideas, who appreciates what it means to be a part of the club,” said Maybury. “Primarily we’re looking at development, and so we want someone who is going to work with our current team, but also we have a whole group of young people who we want to make sure that they are properly trained, and taught, and so we want to move forward with them as well.“It’s the whole package. In looking at our whole cricket programme, we have a cricket committee and it (the job) is working with our chairman and that committee so that we can have a good, strong, programme developed.“It’s a good opportunity for someone to come in and make their mark, especially with the group of youngsters that we currently have. We’re seeing them start to flourish, but we want to make sure that they stay on the good cricket path.”
