First step on road to World Cup

Kevon Fubler

Bermuda Under-19s fly to Florida today for the ICC Americas Division One tournament, taking what they hope will be their first steps along the road to the Under-19 World Cup.The event is also serving as the regional qualifiers for the high profile competition, with the top two sides progressing to the global qualifiers in Ireland in July.Defending champions Canada are again among the favourites, although they will arrive without three of their most influential players, Hiral Patel, Parth Desai, and Nitish Kumar, who are all part of the senior squad Canada have sent to this month’s World Cup.Not that Bermuda head coach David Moore is putting much store in who is playing for the other teams, according to the Australian the only thing you can guarrantee about under-19 cricket is its unpredicability.“No matter where it is in the world, it is so difficult to even make an assesment on opposition in under-19 cricket, because you just never know who teams are going to have that you haven’t accounted for,” said Moore.“I think what we’ve tried to do is really concentrate on what we can control, and concentrate on our performance and making us better. We’ve had a good winter programme, but there’s no subsitute for getting out on the field, and so on.“Although we’ve prepared pretty well, I just think that the issue now is just about how we play the key moments. I know it sounds cliched, but if we play the key moments well, then we will probably come out on top.”Bermuda begin their Americas campaign against Cayman Island’s on Monday, and next week’s game will be the first time the team have played together since July. However, five members of the team, Damali Bell, Christian Burgess, Kevon Fubler, Joshua Gilbert and Kamau Leverock, have all played for the senior side over the course of past 12 months. While the rest took part in the All Star matches that were held in April.Moore is hoping those experiences will go along way to helping the team have a successful week in Florida.“As a team the last time they played together would have been Barbados in July,” said Moore, “but they played in the All Star games (in Spetember) and I’m hoping they learned a lot from that as well.“It certainly would have been nice for it (the Americas) to be in-season in July, rather than off-season, but everyone’s in the same boat, we’ve got a talented bunch of guys, and it’s really up to us whether or not, we do what we do.“We’ve got five guys (in the team) who have played for the senior national side in the last year, and for me it’s a great opportunity for us because we have got some quality players.”n The Bermuda Masters have signed up to play in the Sir Garfield Sobers Tournament in Barbados in November and are looking for supporters who fancy an early Christmas getaway.Taking place from November 5-19, the competition will see ten teams play over two weeks, and anyone wanting to go along can contact Allen Richardson on 293-3531 or 300-3001.
