Bermuda skipper Joshua Gilbert led from the front yesterday as Bermuda opened up their Pepsi ICC Americas Region Under 19 Americas Division I Qualifying Tournament with a four run victory over Cayman Islands in Florida.Gilbert contributed both with the bat and ball, chipping in a valuable 32, while also claiming the prize wicket of Sacha Dealwisseneveratne who was single handedly destroying Bermuda’s bowling attack. In what will be their first steps along the road to the Under-19 World Cup, the Islanders showed plenty of character in fighting back for victory after seemingly throwing away a good position.“It’s always nice to start off a tournament with a win, we have done that and now we can look forward to tomorrow’s match against Canada,” said Bermuda’s senior coach David Moore.“It was a good thing to have a game like this, although I’d have preferred it to be more comfortable but a win none the less.“We won the game when we had no right to win it, which is positive, and the boys reacted well to the situation.“The game was as close as the score suggests, they needed 13 runs off two overs and hats off to Joshua because he came in and took the ball when he could have given it to the medium pacers and got the important wicket for the win. As a captain, he handled the pressure and got the side the win.”On a day that was interrupted by rain, the start was delayed due to a wet playing surface and was reduced to 41 overs.Having lost the toss, Bermuda were sent in to bat by Cayman and managed to score 181 before being bowled out in 29.4 overs.Burgess and fellow opener William White (20) put the side on their way to posting a formidable score as they put on 59 in a first wicket partnership. The departure of Burgess on 59, however, sparked a mini collapse in the middle order with Kamau Leverock being given out lbw 61 and then White was stumped on with the score on 88.Skipper Joshua Gilbert steadied the ship with his 32, but lost partner Kevon Fubler (9) on 115 and was then sent back to the pavilion with the score reading 135 for five. The side would lose a wicket one run later, while also losing two wickets on 161 and 181 to end their innings in just 29.4 overs. In reply to Bermuda’s total, Cayman would find themselves four runs short despite a stroke filled 93 Dealwisseneveratne, an innings that included six fours and three sixes.Shane Cato was the first to go with the score on 15, bowled by Damali Bell, followed by John Tweedie and skipper Darren Cato who were both caught off the bowling of Greg Maybury and Kevon Fubler respectively. When Gilbert eventually bowled Dealwisseneveratne with the scored on 166, Cayman were doomed to come up just short in their run chase. In the end, they were with Fubler grabbing one more wicket to go along with a run out to set up the win.“We will have a meeting to discuss a few things including how to improve our batting a bowling before Canada,” added Moore.“I think we batted quite nicely but only got starts and didn’t build on them so we will talk about this.“In the bowling, we really didn’t follow the plan the whole way, but as long as everyone can undertake their responsibilities we can move forward pretty well.”Next up for the Bermuda are defending champions Canada today. In other the tournament matches played yesterday, Canada beat Bahamas by nine wickets, while USA beat Argentina by 285 runs. The tournament’s top two teams will progress to the global qualifiers in Ireland in July.
