Robinson – 'We have what it takes'

Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson reckons his team have the bowling ammunition to snatch 20 wickets and strip rivals St.George's of the coveted Cup Match trophy in his own backyard this year.

Somerset have left no stone unturned in their quest to avenge back-to-back defeats in 2005 and 2006 and on paper have assembled a squad that appears well rounded, returning all but one player from last year, with Kwame Tucker replacing Dion Stovell.

The challengers have pinned their hopes on dismantling a new look St. George's batting order on two spinners, two seamers and three all-rounders with skipper Robinson set to lead from the front by sharing the new ball with fellow all-rounder Malachi Jones or seamer Jordan DeSilva.

"We have the same team as last year, minus one change with Dion not playing so we bought in Kwame," said Robinson. "We tried to pick a good team, a team that will try and win the match and that is our goal.

"We have assembled a team that looks extremely good, during trainings everyone is putting in the required effort and the talk about winning the cup and how much they want it, so we will be looking to win it this year.

"We have experience mixed with youth and that is a remedy for success."

Speaking of those who were unsuccessful in their bids for get in the squad, Robinson was quick to urge those left out to continue in their quest to be in the side as things change very quickly in Cup Match.

"There were some good performances during the trial, and it is unfortunate that we could only take the required limit, and I want to thank the guys who have come out and made a good impression and even though they weren't picked this year don't' be discouraged.

"Unfortunately, Reid Jones who batted well today didn't get in along with Kevin Hurdle who has come back and was looking good and bowled tremendously well, but as it happens this is the team we have picked and we will look to win with this group right here.

"With Kevin, he bowled the best spell of the day but it came down to the balance of the squad and he did make us think twice and he could have easily been in the squad had we looked at a few other viewpoints, but we can only take 11.

"The wicket will be something that the fans will like, but that is all I can say on that."

In order for the challengers to achieve their objective they will also have to fire on all cylinders at the crease with Tucker coming in to replace Stovell at the top of the order with Chris Douglas.

Somerset also have some heavy hitters of the ball in their camp such as 'Mr. Cup Match' himself, Janeiro Tucker, is one century away from claiming the record the most centuries in Cup Match.

He currently stands at 1,230 runs, 127 runs behind all-time scorer Charlie Marshall, with the question of when rather than if he can break the mark.

Tucker also currently holds the record for the highest individual score (186) and the first Somerset batsman – and fourth overall – to score 1,000 runs in the classic.

"Losing Dion, we knew there was a big gap to fill and with Kwame we feel we have the right person for the job.

"He has been amongst the runs for Southampton this year, and with his experience in being on Cup Match winning teams he is a certain asset.

"The more match winners you have in your team, the more of a chance and a better chance you put yourself in to win the match.

"It doesn't matter what team they have assembled in St. George's, we need 20 wickets and that is the main thing to win the game."
