'We gave it our best' – Somerset skipper
Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson heaped praised on his side for their "tremendous spirit" over the two days of Cup Match at Wellington Oval, although the result didn't go his way.
The 2009 edition ended in the same fashion as last year with the challengers trying to end their long drought by throwing everything in their arsenal at their rivals, but to no avail.
As was the case a year ago, Somerset just didn't have enough firepower to bowl out their opponents at the end of the second day.
"We came in with a strategy and it didn't work out how we wanted it to but we fought hard and with a lot of heart," said Robinson. "We have to go back to the drawing board and think of a new plan for next year."
Last year Robinson was harshly criticised for giving up on the match with St.George's 59 for four and 13 overs left in the day.
This time around, however, the captain waited until what he thought was absolutely no hope of his side winning the match before agreeing to call it off.
"We missed a chance to have Lionel before he got to his century which could have changed the match in our direction, but that's cricket.
"Everyone can say a lot of things – like did we bat too long or not? So there are a lot of things we have to go and fix.
"It wasn't so much the plan didn't work, we were unlucky in a few areas and like I said, that's the game of cricket."
Robinson said his side now had to come up with a new strategy in their bid to wrestle back the title.
This year, the assumption was that the wicket would deteriorate further as the match went on and cause problems for batsmen.
But in the end, the wicket played to the batsman's advantage.
"We thought the wicket would deteriorate more throughout the second day, hence we put up our score and gave ourselves time to do the job," said the skipper.
"It started as we predicted this morning but by the afternoon it had got better and played in their favour.
"At the end of the day, we had a target of getting the trophy back and we have failed.
"A new strategy will be put in place for next year . . . and it can make the difference.
"We will be back next year, ready to go and make a good effort at home in Somerset."
