Bar patrons mixed on team's performance

Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock celebrates his catch of Robin Uthappa off the bowling of Malachi Jones. Viewers at home had mixed feelings about Bermuda's performance.

At the Spinning Wheel, there was a mixture of frustration and gratification over Bermuda’s performance yesterday.

India racked up a world record World Cup one day international score of 413 as their batsmen seemingly scored runs at will.

As a crowd of about 30 watched the game on TV, some reminisced about the Island’s previous top cricketers and the difference they might have made.

Bernal Davis, a retired cricket player, suggested if the Bermuda team had legends such as Dennis Wainwright and Clarence Parfitt, “we would have won the World Cup”.

Some watching the game thought the Indian team’s bowling skills were too superior for Bermuda, while others called for the team to receive more “extensive” training for the next World Cup.

One person, though, had plenty to cheer. Dorothy White, the aunt of 17-year-old Malachi Jones, was especially excited to see the team playing in front of an international audience.

She said: “The team is doing very well, I’m very proud of Malachi and the rest of the team. I can certainly see the them going places in the years to come.”

Former St. George’s captain Neville Darrell reacted with feelings of optimism and disappointment when asked about the home team’s performance.

“The team definitely deserves to be there because they qualified. When it comes to their batting they really need to apply themselves more because they are capable of making more runs,” he added. “I wouldn’t be too critical — even though I’m not satisfied.”
